final book review by someone who hasn’t finished the book

i will finish the book soon (i hope)

The Invisible Man is a book written by Ralph Ellison showing the hardships on a young black man in the 90s. the main character (unnamed) gets kicked out of an all black collage because of a simple mistake towards a white man. he travels to new York looking for work with recommendations from the principle of his old collage. After finding out he can never return to the collage and the principals letters of recommendation meant nothing he decided to find work on his own. a devastating accident at a paint factory causes him to be forced to go get experimental electric shock therapy. this leaves him with very little memory of his old life. he defends an old black woman with a speech and gets hired as a public speaker for a kinda cultish organization.

That’s as far as i got but so far i really like it i am really interested in psychology and i like how the author writes the memory loss in the main character its really believable and almost scary. You can feel how confused and lost he is. You can also see the deteriorating mental state of the main character. How in the beginning he is kind and respectful to everyone even though they don’t deserve it, but by the end he is contemplating murder and hating people he doesn’t even know. I really enjoyed this book i am gonna go finish it now

why does this book matter

i haven’t finished the book yet but so far it shows the struggles of a young black man in the 90s. the main character calls himself an “invisible man” right at the beginning. this shows how he feels like he cannot impact the world no matter how hard he try’s he will never change anything he is invisible and unimportant.

I am going to write the letter the main character sends to his parents in chapter 8

dear mother and father i have gotten a job from a member of the trustee and have moved to new York. don’t worry I will only be here for a year or so until i can make enough money to return to collage. The city has been nice so far, it is amazing there are so many blacks mixed in with the whites. I saw a black traffic directer and everyone obeyed him. I will miss the south though I cant wait to return with all the money I have earned love you,

allusions and thoughts

I have gotten to chapter five and things are still pretty down. the main character fights in a battle royal to get acceptance letters to an all black collage. At first I thought that was kind of nice that the government made collages just for African Americans but…

All black collages where established before the civil rites act in 1964 to keep African Americans from going to all white collages. so that’s less good then I thought but the main character saw this as an amazing opportunity to learn amazing things. his optimism is a stark contrast to the flash forward in the beginning when he was hating life. I’m wondering what happens to him to create that change. only one way to find out, back to reading till next time
